I hate apologetic why-I've-been-gone blog posts, so in short, I was crazy busy starting right after I got back from vacation. something had to give, and this was it. Things have settled down a bit, so I am back.
Anyway, enough of that. What I've been up to dance-wise:
- Taking class when I can with a 2nd local instructor. I think I mentioned in July when I started going to her class. This is actually a beginners class, and I'm loving the chance to take the time to clean up my basic technique. She's helping me get a better handle on knowing how to do things both in a folkloric and an oriental way, and be more conscious of choosing when I want to be folky, and when I want to be fancy.
- We've had a couple of haflas in St Louis this fall. At the one the day after Halloween, I made a mummy-themed bedlah and danced to Steve Martin's "King Tut" (unfortunately, the bedlah ended up looking as much like Rachel Brice's white period as it looked like a mummy. It needs a straight gold skirt and a cheesy ancient Egyptian-style collar to really work.) At the other, I dragged a friend of mine into a very casual and silly improvised duet to Anna Fintizarak. I don't recommend that every set at a hafla be such ridiculous noodling around, but we've both had a lot on our plate lately, and I think the audience knew we were out there to have a good time and dance to get some of that stress out. Also, we are fine and excellent dancers, even when we're just noodling. ;)
- Non-BD community performances. I've been doing a little bit of cultural-type stuff with one of my teachers, but that's really nothing to speak of. Well, we did have our music cut by a Coptic priest. That was a new experience. :)
